The Power of Writing Community: 3 Types of Accountability Every Author Needs
We were never meant to do life alone. And writing is no exception to that rule.
Yes, we may write our words in solitude, but we still need people!
Community is arguably essential to the writing process. We need people to encourage us, challenge us, speak into our lives, and come alongside us as we write!
There are different types of writing support that are needed:
Family and friends - I realize that you may not want the whole world to know that you’re writing a book, but it’s important to let the people closest to you in on the process. They know you best and can tell when you’re overwhelmed. Family and friends can also support your writing goals by helping with practical things that you may need in order to keep writing (childcare, grocery runs, being flexible about meeting up. etc.)
Writing Community - These are your writing friends who get it. They know what it’s like to be in the trenches: paralyzed by writer’s block, overjoyed that a section was finally organized, struggling to keep those writing appointments. These writers have been there too (or are there right now!). A writing community also provides a place to test your writing - have people read a few pages, ask for feedback, and offer feedback!
Writing Coach - Coaches are another layer of accountability. We look at your life, schedule, habits, and preferences and we help you make a writing timeline that works for you. We aren’t afraid to speak the truth in love and we can provide specific feedback - whether that be encouragement or constructive criticism. Writing coaches are here to serve and partner with you on your specific writing project.
What’s one thing that all of these types of writing support have in common? They can all pray with and for you on your journey. Don’t separate your writing journey from your spiritual journey along the way! Establish this support and accountability and reach out when you need it.
